"You might not be the chosen one, still you wait for your time to come*" (side kicks, unchosen ones & unsung heroes)

Heroes are brilliant, iconic, inspirational, aspirational, and totally personal. But where would the heroes be without their sidekicks and 'unchosen' ones around them?

As Xander (From Buffy) describes wrenchingly:

"They'll never know how tough it is... to be the one who isn't chosen. To live so near to the spotlight and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes because nobody's watching me. I saw you last night. I see you working here today. You're not special. You're extraordinary." (Potential, Season 7)

'A sidekick is a stock character, a close companion who assists a partner in a superior position.

A humorous folk origin for the term refers to their accomplishments being 'kicked to the side' or otherwise ignored in favor of the more charismatic lead hero.

Hero sidekicks not only provide comic relief but can occasionally be brave or resourceful at times and rescue the hero from some dire fate.' (Remixed from Wikipedia)

The point?!  Some days we're the hero, and some days we're not the chosen one, but the fundamental sidekick that goes unnoticed. That's not only ok, that's amazing.

Sidekicks make sacrifices (Donna Noble, Doctor Who anyone?), get broken hearts, act as the moral compass, to go Hell and back again, and step up when the hero is down.

The 'bad guys' would have taken over the world so many times if it wasn't for the unsung sidekicks, behind the scenes. Half the time, they don't even know it either.

Whoever you are, whatever the day, be strong and keep doing what you do.

Sidekicks are more important than what we give them credit for. Heroes wouldn't be where they are now if it weren't for them. Sometimes, they even contribute more compared to the damsel in distress. :P
