Flashback: Like It, Lump It, Change It 1.0 (Anti self help and taking control of your life in all areas)
Choice and Responsibility
"You can accept 100% responsibility for everything you are and everything you become. You can refuse to make excuses or to blame others." Brian Tracy
- it's a hard pill to swallow sometimes, but once the penny drops, it's a very liberating thing. Your life is your responsibility and down to your choices alone. Draw a line and take control.
- Choose to take responsibility for your own happy, and apply Like It, Lump It, Change It to any area of your life.
How to Make a Change
1. Decide what you want to change or what your goal is
e.g. lose weight, change job, get out of a relationship, pay off a debt... know what your end goal looks like.
2. Know why
Get clear on why you want to make that change or set that goal. Are you doing it for yourself or someone else? To prove a point? To feel better? For fun?
There is no right or wrong -it's your change and your life.
3. Fuel Up on Motivation and Determination
We're all motivated differently, that's ok. Use whatever motivates you... an image of what you want to be like, or don't want to be like, a role model, a dream...
Use all the songs, films, quotes and music that makes you feel strong and determined. Think repeatedly about how it feels to achieve that end goal and why you're doing it, if you feel your motivation or determination wobbling
4. Find Out How and Make a Plan
Do your research so that you know how to make that change. Look at people who have already achieved what you want to and do what they did.
Use the internet, sites like Video Jug, WikiHow, Youtube and Google have endless information - cherry pick for hints, methods and advice.
Make a plan from your research, in a way that makes sense to you. Some people like to do lists so they can tick off the steps. Whether it's old school pen and paper, or a computerised-spreadsheet-chart-affair do it in a format that you are comfortable with.
5. Set deadlines and take regular baby steps
Deadlines don't have to be uber rigid, but a timescale gives you motivation in itself, particularly if occaisions like birthdays, appearences, holidays and weddings are involved.
Now, do a little bit of your plan everyday so it becomes a habit, and so you progress, slowly but surely and consistently. Lots of little steps make big progress, and as you see your progress, you might find you want to take bigger steps. Just saying.
Remember:
- Take time to look at how far you've come, and reflect on where you do and don't want to be.
- Celebrate the little wins and successes.
- Be flexible, because life happens -it's ok to change the plan and the end goal.
- Roll with the punches and remember that tomorrow is another day, if 'it''s just not happening today, go back to basics and baby steps and you WILL get there!
- Know that sometimes it has to get worse to get better, say, if you're changing diet and exersize, or if the right opportunity hasn't come along yet. It will get better and will totally be worth it.
- Everybody on this planet has the same 24 hours in a day. It's how you choose to use it.
- Walk the walk and do it, rather than being all talk but not actually doing anything. We all know someone that does it.
- Sometimes 'somethings gotta give'. When you're working towards a bigger picture there may be areas of your life that have to go on hold for a little while so you can do what you've gotta do. You have to weigh up how important your change or goal is and what you're willing to 'pay' for it.
- This world is not 'one size fits all'. What works for one person might not work for another, so you've got to figure out what works for you.
- BELIEVE YOU CAN DO IT, have a little faith and don't listen to what others say.
That's how to make a change, without the candyfloss, gurus or cost of a self help book. It works when applied.
(Shameless bit - if this did save you the cost of a self help book, please take a look at the Tips Jar
